Brushed Metal
>> Step 1
Start with a new image (Ctrl+N) of any size. I used 100 x 100. Fill the background with any color. I used a neutral gray.
>> Step 2
Create a new layer (Shft+Ctrl+N) and call it 'bump'. Using WHITE as LOW and BLACK as HIGH, create a bump map (pattern).
>> Step 3
Click on the tab labeled 'Channels'. Right click on 'Blue' and duplicate it. Name the duplicate 'bump'.
>> Step 4
Create another layer and call it 'metal'. Choose a background and foreground color that corresponds to the type of metal you want to make. I chose two shades of grey for aluminum.
>> Step 5
Select the 'metal' layer. Go to Filter>> Render>> Clouds. Then, go to Filter>> Noise>> Add Noise. Choose uniform noise and monochromatic. I used a noise level of 25.
>> Step 6
Go to Filter>> Blur>> Motion Blur. Choose and angle of 0 degrees and a distance of 10 pixels.
>> Step 7
Go to Filter>> Render>> Lighting Effects. Use the following settings:
Intensity: 25
Focus: 75
Gloss: 75
Material: 100
Exposure: 0
Ambience: 0
>> Step 8
Don't click OK yet. Go down to the texture channel menu and open it up. Choose 'bump'. Set the height to 25. Now click OK.
>> Step 9
There you have it. Realistic brushed metal.
